5 Tips for the Perfect Holiday Photo Session

The holiday season is upon us, which means it’s time for one of my favorite traditions: Christmas mini sessions! Whether it’s your first time booking a session or you’re a seasoned pro, there are a few things you can do to make sure your photos turn out merry and bright. 🌟

Here are my top 5 tips for getting the most out of your holiday photo session this year:

1. Coordinate, Don’t Match 🎨👗

Picking outfits for your session can be one of the most exciting (and stressful) parts! The key to picture-perfect family photos is coordinating colors without being too matchy-matchy. Think complementary colors and cozy textures. Soft neutrals with pops of festive colors like deep reds, forest greens, or golds work beautifully. And don’t forget to layer up with cardigans, scarves, or cute hats for a little extra holiday flair!

Pro Tip: Lay all the outfits out together before the session to make sure they blend well without clashing. This is especially helpful if you’re including extended family members or pets.

2. Come Prepared with Snacks & Bribes 🍪🎁

We all know that keeping little ones (and pets!) happy during a photo session can be a challenge. Bring along their favorite snacks, small toys, or even holiday-themed treats to keep them engaged. A little bribery in the form of candy canes or holiday cookies never hurts!

Pro Tip: Make sure treats are easy to clean up and won’t leave stains on those beautiful holiday outfits.

3. Timing is Everything 🕒🌅

Our studio Christmas minis are designed to be quick and fun, but timing is still key. Choose a time of day when your kiddos are well-rested and fed. Morning sessions are great for bright-eyed smiles, while late afternoon can capture that cozy, golden-hour glow.

Pro Tip: If you’re booking with pets, make sure they’ve had a chance to burn off some energy beforehand, so they’re more relaxed during the shoot.

4. Bring Your Own Props for a Personal Touch 🎁🧸

Our studio is decked out with festive decor, but if you want to add a personal touch, feel free to bring your own props! Think cozy blankets, a favorite holiday book, or even your family’s Christmas stockings. Personalized props can make your photos feel even more special and unique.

Pro Tip: If you have little ones, consider bringing a favorite stuffed animal or holiday toy that can be used to grab their attention and make them smile.

5. Relax and Have Fun! 🌟❤️

I know it’s easier said than done, but the best photos come when everyone is relaxed and enjoying the moment. Don’t stress if things aren’t “perfect.” Some of the most magical shots are the candid ones—giggles, snuggles, and all!

Pro Tip: Treat your session like a fun family outing. Play a favorite holiday song in the car on the way over, or plan a special treat afterwards, like hot cocoa or a visit to see Christmas lights.
